Logistics & Supply Chain Process Improvement: Measure What Matters

What is Process Improvement?

Logistics and supply chain process improvement is the systematic review and redesign of how goods, information, and activities move across processes such as procurement, receiving, warehousing, inventory, transportation, and delivery.

The objective is simple: identify delays, unnecessary steps, errors, bottlenecks, excess costs, and weak controls, then redesign the process to perform better.

But improvement cannot be managed by observation alone. It needs KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

Which KPIs Matter?

Different processes require different measures:

  • Procurement: Supplier lead time, purchase price variance, supplier performance

  • Inventory: Inventory accuracy, stockout rate, inventory turnover

  • Warehouse: Dock-to-stock time, picking accuracy, order cycle time

  • Transport: Cost per shipment, vehicle utilisation, delivery performance

  • Customer Delivery: OTIF (On Time In Full), failed deliveries, order fulfilment time

The key is not having more KPIs. It is selecting KPIs that reveal where the process is failing and whether improvement actions are actually working.
